Hazmat

The needs and expectations of hazardous materials teams have grown exponentially in today’s society. The Adams and Broomfield County Hazardous Response Authority, established in January 2025, has been very successful in obtaining modern equipment that would have otherwise been cost prohibitive without federal homeland security grant programs.
The Federal Government, through the Denver Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) and North Central All Hazards Region (NCR) provides this equipment to local governments under the condition that the end users will maintain and sustain that equipment. Adams County Fire, North Metro Fire and South Adams County Fire districts have agreed to take on this responsibility for all the citizens of Adams and Broomfield Counties, as well as any neighboring communities upon request to protect people from any disasters.
ACFR Hazmat Team members attend an initial 80-hour Hazardous materials certification course followed by an additional 24 hours of annual skills training and 120+ hours of specialized training for response to Highway, Rail, and Radioactive emergencies. Hazardous Materials Medical response specialists, also known as "Tox-Medics" are the newest addition to the ACFR Hazmat team. ACFR Hazmat Operates HAZMAT 1 - a 2014 Ford F700 specialized response unit with capabilities to provide an incident command post, identify unknown substances of all types, assist as primary or support to incidents involving highway vehicles, railroad incidents, biological incidents, and flammable liquid incidents. ACFR Station 12 is staffed by 3 hazmat technicians with various specialized qualifications related to these incident types.
